Content: What kinds of stories are appropriate for AMERICAN VISIONS?

AMERICAN VISIONS seeks to answer questions in the public mindset regarding where we are headed as a nation by presenting unique visions of the near future. As alluded to in the RFP, filmmakers are encouraged to apply grounded and practical elements of magical realism, science fiction, and fantasy to current events, and then extrapolate those events to fantastic and hope-inspiring conclusions. Examples of possible issues that projects may explore are the war on terrorism, economics, education, climate change, etc. We encourage filmmakers to consider how the challenges of today will be met, and what effect these outcomes will have on future generations of Americans.

Could you talk/write more about what you mean when you write, "hope-inspiring conclusions?" Also, "grounded and practical elements" of magical realism, etc.? Thanks,
Sam

Are you willing to review our basic premise before we submit our final proposal to make sure it is consistent with what you are looking for? Thank you, Valerie

To respond to Sam’s post regarding clarity of concept, we are happy to offer more detail. In this series, we ask filmmakers to envision a future that is in some ways fantastic and surreal – yet at the same time, we want filmmakers to create worlds that are familiar, and resonate with our own. A setting so bizarre that an audience will fail to see the story's relevance to our current day and age is not very appropriate for AMERICAN VISIONS. This is what we mean when we refer to “grounded and practical” elements of magical realism, fantasy and sci-fi.

Regarding “hope-inspiring conclusions”, this refers to our vision for the series as a whole. We are not suggesting that filmmakers steer clear of complicated or controversial subject matter and present a story that wraps up today’s conflicts in an overwhelmingly positive ending. Your proposed projects may include morally neutral, or even darker elements to some degree. However, we would also like to see a glimmer of hope in these contexts – even if it’s merely a reference to the possibility of better times on the horizon. This series is intended to contradict the post-apocalyptic fare that has become cliché over the years. Instead, this series seeks to present worlds more complicated – worlds that are real, full of ups and downs, opportunities and challenges, worlds where hope exists, even if the primary story conflict does not wrap up neatly at the end of the film.

In response to Valerie's post, we welcome content discussions on this forum - particularly as it regards clarification of the series' intention. However, we do not have the capacity to review written materials prior to the application deadline.
